CHAPTER 76

TANNER REMAINED on his cot for some time after Maxwell and Zakaar left, trying to wrap his head around the whole thing. Once he felt he was ready, he got up. He opened the tap and splashed water on his face, lots of it. Wiping his face with his towel, he looked at the mirror and then, with a snap, turned around, leaving the towel on the cot.

As he came out of the cell, his head was down, and he saw Zakaar's and Maxwell's feet. Without looking them in the eye, he started to walk towards Maxwell’s cell. Zakaar and Maxwell remained at their place, staring at Cole.

Cole smiled at the sight of Tanner, then gazed back at Zakaar and Maxwell and made a throat-slitting gesture with a "Kccch!" sound.

Zakaar glanced towards Tanner and heaved a silent sigh of relief that Tanner wasn’t looking at Cole. He didn’t want him spooked after all that convincing.

Tanner paused near Marquis, who moved the hanging sheets aside and followed him inside.

They knelt near the toilet and started unscrewing the bolts. Once the fixture was free, they moved it until the hole beneath the fixture was fully visible.

Zakaar was right in saying that only Tanner could do it.

Marquis or Maxwell, who were on the bulky side, could get through that hole if they tried, but Tanner understood that they might not come back up or do it regularly.

Tanner was also of a reasonable height, but all the wandering in the yard and doing menial jobs for the prison staff had caused him to lose weight. He couldn’t have imagined that one day it would be a curse for him.

Tanner checked the cell door. The hung sheets and Maxwell manning the gate would ensure no one would be able to peek-in while he was inside. Satisfied, he checked his watch; there were still more than two hours of tier time left.

“D…don't leave this p… place,” Tanner instructed Marquis, who surprisingly took orders from him without growling back. “P… put the fixture back in place once I’m g… gone, I’ll t… tap on the b... back of it when I’m d… done.” Marquis nodded again.

Tanner bent and first slipped his head inside the hole. There was enough space for him to maneuver comfortably. Some light encroached the space coming from the cell, but once he would be inside and with the sink back in place, he knew it would be pitch-dark. He needed a flashlight.

He pulled himself backward and carefully got back on the floor.

“We n... need a f... flashlight. It’s too da…. da… dark in there.” He looked at Marquis.

“I don’t have a flashlight.”

“Then f… find one. We still have t… time.” Tanner was suddenly in charge.

“Okay… okay.” Marquis got up and walked outside.

Tanner pushed the unit back in place and sat on the cot. He decided to remove his shoes. He would carry them and put them back on once he was inside.

Fifteen minutes later, Marquis reappeared with a pen flashlight.

“You’ll have to make do with this.
